Fantasy game art from Neverwinter Nights 2 . Moon elves are the most common sort of elves in Faerûn. Also called silver elves, they have fair skin (sometimes tinged with blue) and hair of silver-white, black, or blue. Their eyes are blue or green, with gold flecks. They are the elven subrace most tolerant of humankind, and most half-elves are descended from moon elves. In earlier games, generic elves had the characteristics of Moon Elves. Neverwinter Nights 2 was based on the 3rd Edition of Dungeons and Dragons, and elves were not yet linked to the Eladrin , which were introduced in the 4th Edition.

Drow (which are not the same as " dark elves " in the Dungeons and Dragons Forgotten Realms fantasy game world) are a dark-skinned sub-race of elves that predominantly live in the Underdark. They are shorter than many other sub-races of elves and, in common with most Underdark-dwelling creatures, have a tremendous resistance to magic. They also have a much higher birthrate than most other elves, but strife tends to keep their numbers down.

Once the rulers of mighty kingdoms across Faerûn, the shield dwarves have since fallen by the wayside after centuries of warfare with their goblinoid enemies. Since then, shield dwarves have been less commonly seen throughout Faerûn, though during the Era of Upheaval the subrace, spurred on by the Thunder Blessing, began to retake an important role in local politics.

They are known to be particularly stalwart warriors and shrewd traders. Gold dwarves are often trained specifically to battle the horrendous aberrations that are known to come from the Underdark.

They now carve out their existence in the Underdark, often near volcanoes. Their kinship to surface dwarves can be compared to that of the drow to surface elves.
